The Volt introduces us to an all-new powertrain concept named E-Flex, and it is an obvious ‘slap-in-the-forehead‘ solution to our current and growing energy/security crisis.
This second variant of the E-Flex system uses GM’s new fifth-generation fuel cell propulsion technology and a lithium-ion battery to provide up to 300 miles (483 km) of petroleum- and emissions-free electric driving.
Before either version of the Volt can be built, significant improvements are required in battery technology. GM has said a mass-market plug-in hybrid requires a battery with a range of at least 40 miles. The range on plug-in cars has typically been no more than 20-30 miles on battery alone.
I want one – after I get a new Camaro, of course.
