Extreme Instability

The only real way to tell what is on the site is to click on each year and look. 04 would be the best with 05 coming in right behind it.

I couldn’t help myself. The TIV(Tornado Intercept Vehicle) was doing 20 mph as this meso passed just to the ne of us. I could tell it was east of the highway and wondered why exactly it was I needed to pass the tornado intercept vehicle. It was funny at the time. You can’t help but feel something is wrong when passing the TIV.

The vehicle you may have seen on the Mid-west roads this spring is a vehicle designed to safely film tornadoes from a close distance. This vehicle has not been designed to penetrate tornadoes, only to film at close quarters. We are in the process of producing an Imax film on tornadoes, which will be released in 2008.

“We had a close call in 2001 in a minivan where we actually locked ourselves out of the minivan,” he says. “We were really close to these tornados. It was just after that we thought, Let’s build a vehicle that can take some abuse“.

  1. Why do I get the impression that, based on your fun index, that you would absolutely THRILL over getting into one of those TIVs and hold on tight?

Yeah. You look all mild mannered in your photo. But I think we’re starting to get to know the REAL Joel. (Does you wife know?)

  2. I really like Steve Green’s “red machine”. I also like CNN’s “Hurricane One” with a gyroscope inside for stability. Part of it is the purpose-built engineering that goes into these vehicles. The other part, I freely admit, is the sense of adventure in penetrating extreme weather. I think we should build an extreme weather rescue vehicle.
