Which “theory of global warming?”
Which? Any of them. They are ALL theories.
I understand that there are many opinions regarding global warming, now often referred to as global climate change. A number have promoted their explanation of our current climate. Some have said that there is no change, some have said there is a change but that it would be happening if people had never been around at all, some put it all on humanity, and many are in between.
It can certainly be said that all are debatable. That’s sort of the nature of theory. There’s a good deal of discussion on the subject all over that internet, in our news, etc. I think that’s a good thing … until it prevents us from taking prudent action. When disagreeing with one small point stands in the way of action on a dozen others where there is agreement is counterproductive.
I think most people have accepted the notion that the climate is doing things we’ve not seen before. A somewhat popular explanation has to do with carbon emissions, something we were already concerned about. (Carbon based fuels have been attributed with contributing to acid rain, smog, etc. We’ve also recognized how our dependence on foreign oil has made us vulnerable. (I remember the 1970s.)) When someone promotes something that would help clean up our emissions or make better use of our resources, it raises the hackles on some that it’s all about climate change and, since they don’t believe we’re responsible for the problem, they’re not gonna be part of this “solution.” Let’s not throw out the baby with the bath water.
With so many schools of thought, my question was more about which Joel found highly debatable.
Here’s the big question:
Are we seeing a runaway greenhouse effect?
I don’t think anyone knows.
Here are some more questions:
Is the current warming trend man made?
Can we stop it?
I don’t think anyone knows.
One last question:
Can we try to “fix” the environment, but end up screwing it up?
I think I know the answer.
I don’t think it is our place to fix it. how could we? We, as humans, do not understand it enough to even predict weather accurately. We don’t know a lot of things about our environment. We also don’t know if the “greenhouse” effect has anything to do with carbon emission. It is STILL a theory. We can’t fix it if we aren’t certain what, if anything,is wrong anyway. This could be a natural cycle of our atmosphere. it could be that cigarette smoke alone is causing the earth to heat up. It could be that the Earth has been warming up since the Ice Age (there weren’t too many carbon emissions then). My point is, we didn’t create it, we don’t know enough about it to try to figure out what the problem is. And as much as i hate to bring religion into it, I have to in this case. My beliefs say this planet will last as long as it needs to. We are not going to destroy it, God is.
