DiggerLand

Digger Land

Children (and adults if they wish) have the opportunity to ride in, and drive, different types of construction machinery including Dumper Trucks, Mini Diggers and Giant Diggers.

Diggerland welcomes you to three parks, one in Strood, Kent, one at Langley Park, Co. Durham, and one at Verbeer Manor, Cullompton, Devon.

JCB’s can be fun, whether you’re holding up the bypass, or going for a land speed record.

Thagomizer

Thagomizer

“The thagomizer is the arrangement of four to ten spikes on the tail of particular dinosaurs, like the famous Stegosaurus, in the clade Stegosauria.

The term ‘thagomizer’ originated as a joke from a Far Side comic strip by Gary Larson, in which a group of cavemen in a lecture hall are taught by their caveman professor that the spikes were named in honor of the late Thag Simmons.

Whatever was the original word for the stegosaurus’ spiked tail, if it indeed ever had one, ‘thagomizer’ has, since the Far Side publication, been adopted as a genuine anatomical term, and is used by multiple palaeontological authorities, including the Smithsonian Institution.

Farnborough Air Show

Farnborough Airshow

From Monday 17 to Sunday 23 July 2006, aviation enthusiasts, families and the aerospace industry will be focused on one place – the 45th Farnborough International Airshow.

Public Visitors are welcome to the show on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd July 2006.

The following aircraft are expected to be on display:

Airbus A320
Airbus A340-600
Airbus A380-800
Bell/Boeing Osprey
Boeing F/A-18F
Boeing C 17
Boeing B777-300 ER
Boeing N-UCAS Navy-Unmanned Combat Air Systems
Boeing Scan Eagle
RAF Harrier GR7
RAF Hawk T1A x 9 (Red Arrows)

Airbus used the backdrop of the Farnborough Air Show to today present a new family of aircraft, the A350 XWB, for Extra Wide Body, which will offer increased range, more speed, enhanced passenger comfort and improved economics and efficiency.

Boeing has completed a large prototype 787 wing section, and now engineers will try to destroy it.

On the first day of the Farnborough Air Show outside London, Boeing released details and photos of the 50-foot-long section – the longest piece of the new jet’s structure yet built and the first largely plastic wing for a jet airliner.

Boeing’s message at the year’s premier aviation showcase: The 787 will soon be a reality, not just a computer-generated image.

The U.S. planemaker is set to dominate Britain’s Farnborough air show with a stream of new orders for its 787 Dreamliner and other jets, which are already outselling its main competitor four-to-one.

The timing could not be worse for Airbus, whose five-year reign as the world’s leading commercial jet builder looks likely to end after slow sales of its delayed A380 superjumbo and indecision over its mid-sized A350.

Senior Marine Corps officers and a top Navy official gave Bell Helicopter’s V-22 Osprey resounding endorsements Monday, dismissing the aircraft’s continued mechanical and reliability problems as normal growing pains.

Honeywell is expected to announce the introduction of its new Synthetic Vision safety system that will be available in 2007 on business jets with avionics systems. Synthetic Vision gives the pilot a three-dimensional view of terrain and obstacles. Honeywell hopes the product will eventually become standard equipment.

Over 60 Russian defense industry companies will present their products at the 2006 Farnborough International Airshow ~ A spokesman for Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation said Russia would present the MiG-29M OVT (Fulcrum F) highly maneuverable air superiority fighter.
~
The single-seat fighter, also marketed for export as the MiG-35, is powered by RD-33 OVT thrust vectoring control engines. The RD-33 OVT engines provide superior maneuverability capability to the aircraft enhancing its performance in close air-to-air engagements.

Boeing 797

Boeing 797

Boeing is preparing a 1000 passenger jet that could reshape the Air travel industry for the next 100 years. The radical Blended Wing design has been developed by Boeing in cooperation with the NASA Langley Research Center. The mammoth plane will have a wing span of 265 feet compared to the 747’s 211 feet, and is designed to fit within the newly created terminals used for the 555 seat Airbus A380, which is 262 feet wide. The new 797 is in direct response to the Airbus A380 which has racked up159 orders, but has not yet flown any passengers.

NASA and its partners have tested six different blended wing body models of various sizes over the last decade in four wind tunnels at the Langley Research Center.

Campos Novos Dam

Campos Novos Dam

The recently completed Campos Novos Dam in southern Brazil failed last week to contain the water in its reservoir, releasing all the water impounded behind the 626-foot (202-meter) tall structure.

Campos Novos is the world’s third tallest dam built with a concrete face filled in with rock. Switkes says this design has become increasingly common in recent years for very high dams.

I HATE IT when that happens. Let’s hope the Three Gorges Dam has better luck!

Poker Quiz

Poker Academy

You’re playing Texas Hold’Em. ~ Which of the following has the best chance of winning?

Jack-10 suited (e.g., a Jack of diamonds and a 10 of diamonds)
Ace-7 unsuited (e.g., an Ace of spades and a 7 of clubs)
Pair of sixes

The answer, to nobody’s suprise, is: it depends! ~ The absolute probability that you will win obviously goes down if you are playing against more opponents with randomly-chosen cards, just because there are more ways they could beat you. But, much more interestingly, the ordering of which hand is best also changes.

What happens if, instead of putting one of these three hands against some other random cards, we put them up against each other, two at a time?

Sixes are likely to beat A7, and A7 is likely to beat JTs, but JTs is likely to beat a pair of sixes. It’s a kind of combinatorial rock-paper-scissors situation.
